Phoenix | History & Kanji
The Phoenix artwork originated as a practice project created by Andrew Pilch under the guidance of Ed Parker Jr. to help him learn how to incorporate flames into his art. What began as a simple exercise evolved into one of AIK’s most meaningful symbols — representing the power of rising from inevitable failures and turning them into stepping stones for growth and improvement.

Kenpo Karate
In the Kenpo Karate artwork, the Phoenix is accompanied by the Kenpo Kanji and its translation. You will find this Kanji displayed on various AIK artwork as well as on all 5th Degree and above black belts.

Stages of Development
The Stages of Development artwork also features the Phoenix. In addition to the bird itself, it includes the three classic stages of learning known as Shu, Ha, Ri — a concept first introduced to Mr. Pilch by Lee Sprague.
