What sets AIK apart is our rigorous Instructor and Leadership Training Program (ITP), a cornerstone of our commitment to excellence. Developed over decades by Master Pilch and the AIK Senior Staff, this certification process is a meticulous blend of evolving martial arts knowledge and timeless teaching principles, designed to sharpen the skills of both novice leaders and veteran instructors across all our programs. Through countless hours of research and refinement, the ITP equips our staff with skills that transcend the dojo—enhancing their ability to teach with clarity, adapt to individual needs, and inspire lifelong learning.
This program has ensured that every lesson at AIK—whether in Kenpo Karate, Tactical Sparring, or Smart Girl Self Defense—reflects the highest standards of precision and impact. It offers students a rare opportunity to learn from a faculty continually pushing the boundaries of martial arts education.
Traditional Values

L.A.W.S. of
The Scholar & Warrior
At the American Institute of Kenpo, we believe self-defense goes beyond physical techniques—it’s about building character through timeless values that have guided people for generations. Our approach highlights principles like truth, bravery, courtesy, compassion, sincerity, discernment, and loyalty, inspired by a unique blend of traditions.
Drawing from the L.A.W.S. of the Scholar and Warrior—a code crafted by contributing mentor Lee A. W. Sprague, rooted in the spirit of Bushido but shaped by Western ideals of chivalry—we focus on fostering a sense of honor and responsibility.
Rest assured, this isn’t about religious teachings; it’s about practical, everyday values that anyone can embrace. Our expert instructors are committed to helping students weave these qualities into their lives, empowering them to stand as protectors and confident individuals, both in and out of training.

There's an old Chinese Proverb that goes like this:"A good teacher is better than a thousand books."I think we're fortunate to have Mr. Andrew Pilch as our chief instructor, who embodies the old martial arts philosophy of quiet honor, support, and discipleships. Mr. Pilch is interested in and truly supports the growth and martial arts interest of his students. He's masterful and very experienced in various styles of martial arts, especially American Kenpo.

My son Sam and I joined AIK recently when we moved from Massachusetts to Tucson. We immediately liked the dojo and the staff. Everyone is super supportive and helpful. I love Mr. Pilch’s teaching style and never leave a class without learning something new and valuable. He is great with kids and makes it a lot of fun. I have been studying martial arts for almost 25 years. I experienced different styles and different schools both in the US and abroad. AIK really stands out! Both Mr. Pilch and his instructors are highly dedicated, patient, and knowledgeable. I have personally experienced great benefits of studying American Kenpo and I truly believe it is incredibly beneficial for kids to develop self-discipline, respect, and crucial self-defense skills. Definitely recommend AIK to both kids and adults!
