Shay Muscarella is a highly skilled Senior Instructor and valued member of AIK’s Ready Reserve teaching team — always ready to step in and deliver exceptional instruction whenever needed.

Shay began his martial arts journey in 2000 with Taekwondo through the Young Olympians program. The following year, he joined his father, Lee Muscarella, at the American Kenpo Karate Academy (AKKA). From a very young age, Shay showed legendary dedication to his training. Even after sustaining a back injury in his youth, he continued training Kenpo while wearing a hard body brace — a testament to his determination.

In 2005, Shay transitioned with his family to the American Institute of Kenpo (AIK). He earned his black belt and began instructing in 2007. Although he is no longer teaching daily classes, Shay remains an important part of AIK’s instructor pool. Students who train with him consistently remark how much their understanding and skills improve under his guidance.

In addition to Kenpo, Shay has trained extensively in boxing, kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA. From 2016 to 2017, he competed in amateur boxing and kickboxing, maintaining an undefeated record. He also had the remarkable opportunity to train for a week at the renowned Jackson Wink MMA gym alongside world-class fighters, including Holly Holm.

Shay is a strong supporter of AIK’s Tactical Sparring program. He brings high-level skills in boxing, kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA, making him an exceptional and demanding training partner for students of all levels — from beginners to advanced practitioners.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Shay serves as a first responder with the fire department. Together with his dad, they form a dynamic father-son duo that teaches AIK’s CPR and First Aid certification courses. Students and instructors alike appreciate the valuable knowledge they deliver — along with plenty of humor and entertainment.
