Two Locations To Serve You: Northwest Tucson & East Tucson
The American Institute of Kenpo (AIK) is an organization founded by Shawn Knight and Andrew Pilch. We are dedicated to the development of character, confidence, physical well-being, and internal peace through the medium of the art of self-defense that we call Kenpo Karate.
We are committed to maintaining the integrity and legacy of Kenpo Karate in the lineage of Sigung (teacher's teacher/elder uncle) Stephen LaBounty. We are also guided by AIK's Masters Council consisting of: Bob White, John Sepulveda, Lee Wedlake, Mike Winkeljohn and Rebecca Knight.
We encourage each student to travel the path of self-discovery as he or she internalizes the concepts, theories and principles of Kenpo Karate.

AIK is dedicated to refining and providing superior resources and training for our students and affiliates in the following three areas.
A - Access:
This is our Static Resources which include but are not limited to our web content, manuals, training videos, and charted curriculum.
I - Interaction:
This is the verbal and visual feed back provided by our certified instructors. This feedback can be received by students participating in our Zoom classes or through in-person training at any AIK location. This allows our certified instructor to mentor our students and provide guidance to them in order to assist them with their understanding of the material being presented.
K - Kinetic:
This is the physical interaction with others allowing our students to see how the theories, concepts, and principals can be employed in the physical realm of reality to defend themselves. This level of training can be achieved by participating in our Zoom classes with a partner or through in-person training at any AIK location. Under both training options we ask that any physical interaction with another person be overseen by our staff so proper precautions can be communicated and experienced feedback can be provided to keep potential injuries to a minimal.
- We recommend an active parent or guardian participate as a training partner for those children participating in Zoom classes only.
- We recommend a trustworthy adult friend or family member participate as a training partner for those adults participating in Zoom classes only.
The American Institute of Kenpo (AIK) strongly recommends that all training be overseen by experienced and qualified instructors. Individuals choosing to train without the recommended oversight assume full liability for any and all injuries. In addition, those individuals engaging in training without the oversight of the American Institute of Kenpo’s (AIK’s) certified instructors will be doing so with the understanding and acknowledgment that they are waving subrogation and holding harmless the American Institute of Kenpo (AIK), it's members, and affiliates.
