Staircase of Knowledge

Attaining rank is a motivational goal for the martial artist.  The American Institute of Kenpo believes that the fundamental qualities and characteristics of each rank should not vary.  We test a student only after careful evaluation and we hold our students accountable at each level on their journey to Black Belt and beyond.

Courage:  A White Belt practitioner has begun the journey of a martial artist.  We commend your decision and look forward to a long and successful journey in American Kenpo Karate.
Discipline:  A Yellow Belt practitioner is given an introduction to American Kenpo while developing a working knowledge of the basics—the foundation of the Art.
Respect:  A Orange Belt practitioner must strive for the development of proper form so as to enhance the effectiveness of the basics.
Honesty:  A Purple Belt practitioner must strive for the development of speed achieved through the economy of motion by executing basics with proper form.
Loyalty:  A Blue Belt practitioner must possess a proper display of power achieved by the correct application of form plus speed of the basics.
Character:  A Green Belt practitioner must strive for the development of timing achieved by the proper application of breath control.
Courtesy:  A 3rd Degree Brown Belt practitioner must strive for the development and display of focused strikes achieved by adding power to breath control.
Integrity:  A 2nd Degree Brown Belt practitioner must enhance his or her physical fitness in order to increase stamina and gain a tolerance for pain.
Honor:  A 1st Degree Brown Belt practitioner must strive for the development of mental skills by possessing a working knowledge of the principles, concepts and theories of American Kenpo.
Determination:  A Red Belt practitioner has begun the transition to Black Belt and must combine and apply all previous knowledge.
Gratitude:  A Red/Black Belt practitioner must take upon themselves all the duties, responsibilities, and obligations that a holding the rank of Black Belt in the martial arts entails.

Excellence:  A 1st Degree Black Belt must demonstrate his or her expertise in American Kenpo by properly combining basics, form, speed, power, breath control, focus, physical conditioning, with a knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories.
