Attaining rank is a motivational goal for the martial artist. The American Institute of Kenpo believes that the fundamental qualities and characteristics of each rank should not vary. We test a student only after careful evaluation and we hold our students accountable at each level on their journey to Black Belt and beyond.
Courage: A White Belt practitioner has begun the journey of a martial artist. We commend your decision and look forward to a long and successful journey in American Kenpo Karate.
Discipline: A Yellow Belt practitioner is given an introduction to American Kenpo while developing a working knowledge of the basics—the foundation of the Art.
Respect: A Orange Belt practitioner must strive for the development of proper form so as to enhance the effectiveness of the basics.
Honesty: A Purple Belt practitioner must strive for the development of speed achieved through the economy of motion by executing basics with proper form.
Loyalty: A Blue Belt practitioner must possess a proper display of power achieved by the correct application of form plus speed of the basics.
Character: A Green Belt practitioner must strive for the development of timing achieved by the proper application of breath control.
Courtesy: A 3º Degree Brown Belt practitioner must strive for the development and display of focused strikes achieved by adding power to breath control.
Integrity: A 2º Degree Brown Belt practitioner must enhance his or her physical fitness in order to increase stamina and gain a tolerance for pain.
Honor: A 1º Degree Brown Belt practitioner must strive for the development of mental skills by possessing a working knowledge of the principles, concepts and theories of American Kenpo.
Determination: A Red Belt practitioner has begun the transition to Black Belt and must combine and apply all previous knowledge.
Gratitude: A Red/Black Belt practitioner must take upon themselves all the duties, responsibilities, and obligations that a holding the rank of Black Belt in the martial arts entails.
Excellence: A 1st Degree Black Belt must demonstrate his or her expertise in American Kenpo by properly combining basics, form, speed, power, breath control, focus, physical conditioning, with a knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories.
